For Students of Art
"An artist is not one who is inspired but one who can inspire others." ~ Salvador Dali
I have added this page for all of you who have given the honour of choosing me as the topic of a school or college project, or to use my artwork to help you with your research into technical studies of form, style and specific mediums. There is a little about me on the site under 'meet me' and gives some information on how I came to specialise, which may also help.

All portraits, graphics and works of art on this site have been created by me. I am a 'realist fine artist' in the true sense in that my fine art studies are produced for their aesthetic value and are a true representation of their natural form..... and are therefore classed as "Realism".

Realism played a large part in the art scene until the 1950's when it was almost eliminated from critical acclaim. I am a 'photo-realist' fine artist and due to the very nature of my work, was not considered suitable for admission as a fine art student in the 1970's.

My first love though was drawing and although I made a specific point of not studying the 'masters' for fear of being influenced, I was inspired by the work of Albrecht Dürer and Rubens. At first I could only draw from black and white photographs as I had not discovered tone but I soon realised that coloured subjects and images were needed to create accurate, fine detail in graphite and charcoal. Graphite is still my favourite and, for me, the medium that evokes the most powerful emotion.

When I create a drawing I know that the viewer will see my artwork just as I intended. Even colour-blindness and its related visual anomalies will not distort the final image. Of all the portraits on the site the head of a Weimaraner: 'Forever and a Day' - Dog Print Gallery 4, Akita bitch Sky: - Drawing Gallery 3 and 'Window to the Soul': - Graphite Gallery 1, illustrate the full potential of this much underestimated medium.

Originally, my watercolours were just that - watercolour - but the overall flatness and lack of vibrancy, as far as I was concerned, was not suited to animal portrait studies. I had never mastered the use of pastels as they were very messy and really not delicate enough for the kind of detail I strived for. Discovering the pastel pencil altered my opinion towards them and led to a revolution in style of my pastel enhanced watercolour portraits. This is now the most popular medium commissioned and is also copied by many other artists. A compliment indeed!

Oil paints are the most difficult medium to use. My particular style of oil portraiture lends itself to the school of 'Chiaroscuro' emphasizing the play of light on the coat and bone structure of the subject. This creats a strong, dynamic image that projects the portrait study giving a three dimensional illusion to the image.
Backgrounds range between stormy skies for dramatic atmosphere to beautiful serene sunsets for relaxed ambience. I have been using oils all my working life but it is only in recent years that I feel I have mastered their application. Try searching the internet - you will not find many portrait artists that use oils - especially on canvas.

Let me know if you would like to use any of my images in your projects or studies and I shall send you unprotected copies that you can print out and keep.

I shall add other information from time to time if I think it is helpful, but if there are any questions you would like to ask I shall gladly try to answer them for you.   And would those of you who have chosen me as a subject artist please let me know how you get on ~ I should love to hear from you.

With all best wishes,  Pam
