Question & Answers - Pam Reed

The following is a selection of questions I am asked routinely. Please contact me if you have any others to add.

Q:  How long have you been a professional painter?
A:  Although I sold my first painting at age 15, I spent many years supplementing my income with a series of 'day jobs'. My definition of a 'professional' fine artist is one who lives solely off the earnings of their artwork.

Q:  What inspires you when you paint?
A:  Not sure that I am inspired as such. I have a fascination with the animal eye and an innate need to create images.

Q:  Why are your portraits so much better than photographs?
A:  I choose several photographs that best depict detail, colour and shape. I then try to capture both character and soul.

Q:  What is a typical working day?
A:  No such thing as each day is different ...... but I start every day by walking my dogs and am usually out by 6am.

Q:  How do you develop your ideas?
A:  Usually by looking at the supplied photographs and images. It sometimes takes days to reach a conclusion.

Q:  How do you solve any problems you may encounter?
A:  Problems mostly arise because what I am trying to do is wrong. So, having a re-think usually does the trick.

Q:  Do you have a favourite artist?
A:  Not really.

Q:  How long does it take you to complete a painting?
A:  How long is a piece of string!

Q:  Do you have a favourite medium?
A:  Graphite. Regardless of colour blindness and other visual anomalies, I know the onlooker will see exactly the same as I do.

Q:  Have you ever worked in 3D form?
A:  I have but I prefer to leave it up to more competent artists!

Q:  Did you learn your skills or are they a natural ability?
A:  I believe that anyone can be taught to create good art if given enough time and practice. A gifted fine artist must be able to create spontaneously from within.

Q:  Do you have a favourite piece of artwork?
A:  'Window to the Soul' - a graphite drawing of my daughter's horse - sadly no longer with us.

Q:  Ultimately, what do you hope to achieve?
A:  Through my art I hope to pass on a passion and respect for all life.
